FAQs
What is the Equestrian Club? We are a group of students who share a passion for horses. Even if you have never been on a horse before you can be part of our club. The club hosts horse-themed movie nights, trail rides, and other horse-related activities. There is also an opportunity to take lessons through our club.
What is the difference between the team and the club? The team and the club work together as one. Team members compete against different colleges in our Intercollegiate Horse Show Association region. If you do want to compete you must have four hours of instruction by either Lori or Amy (depending on if you are western or english).
Where are your stables? Juniata College does not have its own stables, so the competing team rides at Evonly Equestrian (English) and Mansion Farms (Western), which are both approximately 45 minutes from campus. You are allowed to ride anywhere, but carpools will only go to those two barns and if you are on the team you must have 4 lessons before each show at one of those barns.
I don’t have a car. How do I get to the barn? The officers will work with the club members who wish to go for lessons to create a schedule at the beginning of each semester with a driver to carpool. Those students who do have a car are asked to provide transportation to those who don’t.
I have never ridden a horse. Can I still ride? Yes! Everyone is welcome! We love to have new riders.
I do not have a lot of experience riding. Can I still be on the competing team? Yes! Our coach will evaluate you and put you into the correct level for your abilities. Juniata's Team is a mix of both experienced and beginner riders.
Can I board my horse near campus? Yes, prior arrangements may be made with the barn owner to secure a stall for your horse.
How much do lessons cost? Private and group lessons cost $20/hour. We ask for $4 each trip to the barn to cover the cost of gas.
Do I have to go to the barn every week? No, you can go as much or as little as you want. The members that really enjoy riding go 4 times a week, the members who just like to go out once and a while may just go once a month.
Do I need to own my own riding apparel? No, we do encourage our members to purchase boots for safety reasons. Helmets are provided by the team.
Are there intercollegiate competitions? Yes. We compete in the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Showing Association) in both English Hunter/Jumper and Western. Students must provide their own funding for each show and the annual entrance fee for the IHSA.
Do I have to compete in the IHSA if I take lessons? No. Many students take lessons and choose not to compete.
