| The
Juniata College Emergency Medical Services have
existed in a variety of forms since 1996. The club
originated as a group of students interested in fire
rescue, emergency medical services, criminal
justice, and other emergency services to meet and
interact with other persons with this interest.
Beyond this, the club also strived to provide
services to the campus community to make it a safer
place to live. This was done by painting the
campuses handicapped parking spaces, checking fire
extinguishers, providing EMT's to standby for
"Storming of the Arch." This goal was also
accomplished through starting the mock accident
drill, which raises awareness about how the EMS
system works and how drunk driving affects people.
After some time, the leaders of the club decided
that they wanted to start a Quick Response Service.
A QRS can best be described as an ambulance service
without the ambulance. The QRS is dispatched at the
same time as the local ambulance and responds with
trained Emergency Medical Technicians and trained
attendants to the scene of the emergency with
essentially all the equipment that an ambulance
carries. The personnel then provide care until the
ambulance arrives to transport the patient to the
hospital. This QRS finally came into being through
hard work, many phone calls, much purchasing of
equipment, and the assistance of the college's head
athletic trainer of the time.
The ESSC/QRS then consisted of 30 members,
of whom 10 members held licenses to serve as EMT's.
2 also helds licenses to serve as First responders,
and at least 5 had certifications to serve as First
Aiders. The ESSC/QRS 8 provided training to its
members and to any members of the college and
surrounding communities. QRS 8 provided medical
standbys to any valid request made by a campus
activity or organization. In addition, the QRS 8
provided emergency care to the campus with its
weekly duty crew consisting of am EMT officer,
second EMT or First Responder, and a First Aid
attendant. This duty crew responds to emergencies on
campus with an average time of 90 seconds.
The QRS, which was dedicated to former
student John B. Shuster, one with much interest in
EMS, has been in service since 1998. In 2006, the
QRS and the ESSC were merged into the Juniata
College Emergency Medical Services, though our
mission has remained the same. to provide assistance
to the local community in training and care, to
promote a feeling of safety on the Juniata College
Campus, and providing a coalition of friendship for
individuals interested in emergency services.
