| The John
B. Shuster Memorial - Juniata College Emergency
Medical Services is both a club sponsored by the
Juniata College and a registered Quick Response
Service with the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
JC EMS is devoted to providing a place for persons
with an interest in the fields of emergency medicine
and fire fighting to practice their skills, as well
as to help these persons of similar interests
cultivate new friendships. In addition, JC EMS
makes provisions for trips to area hospitals and
other EMS facilities to allow for a better
understanding of the system. Beyond this, training
is offered to any person interested. At the current
time the club sponsors training in CPR, First Aid,
Lifeguarding, as well as providing, in conjunction
with the Southern Alleghenies EMS Council, a course
to become a
Pennsylvania state certified emergency medical
technician or Pennsylvania state certified first
responder. In addition to these courses, training
sessions are also periodically available for water
rescue, ropes rescue, boat rescue, and vehicle
rescue.
The Quick Response
Service, or QRS, is a state licensed non-transport
basic life support emergency response team. Thus,
when 9-1-1 dispatchers receive an emergency call
from campus, the QRS is alerted in addition to the
local ambulance company. The QRS then responds to
scene, with an average arrival of less then 90
seconds, to provide the appropriate medical care
until the ambulance arrives to transport the patient
to the local hospital. The QRS consists of a
three-person duty crew, available twenty-four hours
a day, seven days a week, for the extent of the
school year. The response team consists of an
emergency medical technician officer, who is in
charge of the emergency scene, a second EMT,
responsible for providing primary care, and an
attendant, to assist as needed. In addition to
responding to emergencies, the QRS attends the
National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services
Conference to receive additional training not
normally offered in this region, as well as to learn
how other similar organizations function. As well
as the conference, the QRS sponsors a mock accident
drill each year. This drill consists of a two
vehicle accident in which the QRS, campus security,
local rescue companies, local fire companies, the
local ambulance company, and MedStar join forces to
show students how EMS works, as well as providing a
valuable training element for all persons involved.
This way, in the event of such an accident, all
parties would be able to work in harmony for the
betterment of the patients.
No previous medical
experience or a POE in medicine is required to join
JC EMS. Anyone with an interest in emergency
medicine or firefighting is welcome to attend
meetings. If you have questions, feel free to
contact the club at
