Rugby here at Juniata has a deep tradition. Many of
the student body's favorite events are in fact rugby traditions.
Storming of the Arch
The first is the Storming of the Arch (See also History
of JC Rugby). During the first few weeks of the Fall Semester, freshmen
are invited to storm the arch while those who have stormed in the
past (mostly male and female ruggers and residents of Cloister),
defend the arch by tackling those who storm. To date no one has
ever made it through to the arch. The event is used today as a charitable
event as stormers, defenders, and onlookers donate.
Homecoming
The Rats play the Alumni during Homecoming weekend.
The Spillway
After each home game the team goes to the Spillway
for an after game cookout. The Rats and their opponents eat and
socialize after a game and play games like boche ball and frisbeer.
Zulus and Land Sharks
A Zulu happens when a player scores their first try
in a game. A Land Shark happens whenever someone scores three tries
in one game. You would have to come to the after party to see what
happens.
The Grinch and Rugby Carroling
At the Grinch Christmas Party elections are held for
the next school year. Afterwards the team watches the How the Grinch
Stole Christmas. Following that, the team goes through campus singing
songs.
Festivus
Held off-campus during finals in the Fall Semester.
Comparable to the Seinfeld episode complete with the pole, Airing
of Grievances, and the Feats of Strength.
Pig Roast
Perhaps the most anticipated event on campus during
the year. Held in April at Raystown Lake, most of the campus comes
to the lake to enjoy a leisurely day to socialize, eat, drink (alchohol
only if 21+), and watch the Rats take on their Alumni in a game
that the Alumni always win, the cheatin' bastards.
308
Since the mid-1990s, 308 East has been the Rugby Room.
The Man Market
An event that happens annually, The Man Market was created and organized by Marc "Funk" Staudenmaier during the 2006 and 2007 fall seasons. It is a bachelor auction of sorts primarly for the men's rugby team, though other popular personalities of Juniata College are encouraged to participate. Lucus "Luka" Ferster holds the current high record after being sold for $76. It still stands as the Juniata Men's Rugby Team's second biggest fundraiser behind Pigroast, and is one of Juniata College's most attended events.
