PARSO

This is our Strength

We are a very diverse group, and we all bring our life experiences with us as we enter into this academic curriculum. The main goal of this club is to pass on the help we received, whether it was a friendly ear, or information that helped us succeed in our classes, to the next group of PARSO members that enters the Juniata community.

Program for Area Residence Support Organization

PARSO is a group for non-traditional and traditional students who are in need of personal and or educational support.
Non-traditional students are defined as students that have not been in an educational environment (High School and or College) for at least 5 years. Non-traditional students are eligable to recieve PAR benefits.

What are PAR benefits?

The Program for Area Residents, known as PAR at Juniata, offers to reduce Juniata's tuition by half to residents of Huntingdon, Blair, Mifflin, Bedford, Centre, Fulton, Franklin, and Juniata counties. The program is open to any adult who has been out of high school for at least five years and is willing to commute to Juniata's campus. In addition, any returning adult student cannot have attended Juniata as a degree-seeking student within the past two years. Financial aid, in addition to the tuition break, is available to those who qualify.

History

In the Fall of 1999 some returning adult students realized that there were plenty of resources avaliable for help, but felt uncomfortable asking the more traditional students that were younger than they were. Over the next 2 years several students met unofficially and occasionally to discuss the problems they were having with different subjects and life in general concerning the return to college after being away from a school setting for several years. These students collectively discussed their problems with Dan Cook-Huffman, Assistant Dean of Students, Tom Kepple, Juniata College President and other faculty members. With the help of the faculty and many other adult students, the PARSO club became an official club at Juniata College in the Spring semester of 2001.

PARSO Lounge

The PARSO group has a designated room set aside for meetings and a place to get away from the hustle of campus life. It's not much but if your interested please stop by. The PARSO Lounge is located downstairs in Good Hall, right at the bottom of the steps it's the first door you see straight ahead of you, beside the vending machines. Normally there are several group members having lunch around noon in this room, there is a refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, and coffee pot avaliable for use. There is also a supply of paper plates, plastic utensils, etc. for the members use.

Stop by and introduce yourself, just take a break between classes, or if you just need a place to vent your frustrations, there is usually other PAR students in the room that are willing to listen.
