I will be a senior in the 2004-2005 academic year and this will be my second year living in The House. I think our first year was successful and I’ll never forget the guys and our first year attempting to offer more campus events that are alcohol-free. I believe we exceeded our goals we set at the beginning of the year by providing various events and we had a significant portion of the campus attend many of these events. We were continuously in the process of planning new events.
I have designed my own POE titled “Youth Services and Education.” My primary focus is on education, but I’m also adding correlating courses in Sociology and Social Work, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Psychology to help me acquire more skills and knowledge to address the vast range of problems today’s youth encounter. I am intending this POE to support a career as a counselor and/or teacher. This past summer I was a counselor and hiking instructor at a camp in California for diabetic children. There is a good chance I will sign up for the “Teach for America” program and spend the first year or two out of college teaching in a low income school in a rural or urban area. From there I will probably attempt to find a more permanent position as a teacher or counselor and possibly go to graduate school.
I am currently a Big
Brother in the Huntingdon Area Middle School and have a practicum in Southside
Elementary School and I absolutely love both experiences. I am also involved
in the ski club and I am a very avid free-skier in the winter. My other main
hobbies include surfing, BMX, rock climbing, hiking/backpacking/camping, fishing,
meditating, and I recently started swing dancing and fencing occasionally.
In fall of 2004, I will be studying abroad in Cheltenham, England at the University
of Gloucestershire and it is needless to say that I am extremely excited for
that.
Seth is a senior studying Business and German. During the fall of 2003 and spring of 2004, Seth was studying in Muenster, Germany.
Mike is a senior studying Physics and plans on attending medical school after graduation.
While in my first year at Juniata I was a part of the Cross Country team and now the indoor and outdoor track teams. Running is a large part of my life outside of academics. I am also involved with the Fellowship for Christian Athletes group and other activities presented by campus ministry. I am a member of the Students of Business; however I am not highly involved in their activities. I like to attend the campus activities such as comedians, the Chinese acrobats, Madrigal, the Sept. 11 vigil, and other events the college has offered. My POE is Business Management with a minor in Ethics, which is a mixture of Philosophy, Religion, and Social Studies.
I am currently a junior here at Juniata College and I am working on a POE (major) in Physics/Secondary education with a secondary emphasis in French. I hope to become a physics teacher after I graduate from college, and maybe attend graduate school in the future as well. Here at Juniata I have tried to be involved in as many activities outside of class as possible, but it is tough because there are so many fun clubs and so little time. Throughout my college career I have been a member of the cross-country team as well as the indoor and outdoor track teams. I am also involved in French club, Society of Physics Students, fellowship of Christian Athletes, Sapsuckers Maple Syruping club, Ski club, Student Director of the Pennsylvania State Science Olympiad, and I have radio show at the radio station (go to www.wkvr.com and listen). My hobbies include canoeing, frisbee, flying my kite, knitting, running, jumping and playing. I enjoy long walks at night and playing on playground equipment. In the spring of 2005, I will be studying abroad in France.
I am continuing my time here at Juniata, only in a different way. I am a Resident Director in South Hall and Work with the Dean of Students Office and the Health & Wellness Center. I am acting as a mentor to the new members as they continue on with The House and am here to answer any questions they might have and provide support for all of their efforts. We are working on applying for more grants throughout the year and trying to improve our program efforts with the local taverns and distributors. I will be applying to graduate schools for Public Health and hope to continue my efforts in health education.
Living in The House has been one of the most memorable experiences while at Juniata. Our first year turned out to be very successful and I hope that it continues to grow. I enjoyed having a supportive environment for learning social responsibility but also for providing the campus with a great place where they could have lots of fun.
As a student I was pretty involved outside of The House with activities such as the Americorps Bonner Leaders program, Student Ambassadors, JAB, Community Service Board, and IM Sports. I was an RA for three years and developed my leadership skills through many different initiatives on and off campus. My POE was Bioethics & Community Health.
I graduated in 2004 with a POE in Environmental Studies and Communication. I was involved in many campus activities such as IM sports, Radio DJ, International Room-mate program, Environmental Science Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Men’s Bible Study, Remote Field Course, National History Day, Special Olympics, and Service Learning Trips. Being a co-founding member and senior in the house has been a great experience which has helped me learn to work with others better, and has helped me learn to use my time more efficiently. I was an intern with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for three summers while at Juniata, and plan to take an Americorps position with the Maryland Conservation Corps after graduation.
Nathan "Killer" Hollenbach 2004
On campus, I was involved in several organizations including the Christian Ministries Board, the leadership team of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Praise team for Campus Ministry where I am a musical accompanist, and I have a radio show called the Old Man Power Hour with my roommate. I try to be involved in the Environmental Science Society but have found that my studies have taken more time than I have available. My POE is Biology and German. I chose to study biology because of my interests in the outdoors and nature. Other hobbies and interests include music, hiking, camping, and anything else related to the outdoors. I go to thirty or more concerts a year and enjoy both being a musician and a music appreciator. The house will benefit me because it will provide an area for both fun and getting to know more people on campus.
I graduated from Juniata in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology/Web Media. During my senior year at Juniata I was a member of The House. I liked having the opportunity to live with such a diverse group of people and this was a great closing to my years at Juniata, as well as, a great beginning for future students. I enjoyed the events that took place in the house and helped out with the Trail of Terror, and organized some of the musical entertainment we provided. I was also student manager of the Teaching Learning Technology Center (TLT).
Currently I am living Washington D.C. – Virginia area. I am employed at Northrop Grumman Information Technologies, working in their Defense Enterprise Solutions division. I recently got engaged to a remarkable young woman and plan to make my home in Virginia eventually. The wedding right now is set for fall of 2005. Wish me luck with life in the real world, as I wish all of you much success for the future.
Matt Holtry is currently a senior studying Peace & Conflict Studies and the Technical Revolution. He was in Brussels, Belgium, during the spring of 2004 working with the European Union.
