Lambda Epsilon Chapter

Constitution & Bi-laws

We the students of Juniata College established a chapter of Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society to be known as Lambda Epsilon. It is a society for students, particularly undergraduates, based on academic achievement. It should emphasize the support of continued scholarship, dissemination of scientific knowledge, and promotion of biological research.

Article I: Name

The name of this organization shall be the Lambda Epsilon Chapter of the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society.

Article II: Purpose

The purpose of this society is to function as an honor and professional society for students of the biological sciences.

Article III: Membership

The membership of this society shall be open to all biology "majors" who have met the standards set forth in the bi-laws.

Article IV: Officers

The officers of this club shall be as follows: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian.

Article V: Meetings

Business meetings shall be no less than once a month. The dates shall be agreed upon the first meeting of the school year.

Article VI: Adoption of the Constitution

The adoption of the Constitution will require a two-thirds vote of all Active Members of the society present at a meeting, and approval of the chapter officers.

Article VII: Amendments

An amendment to this Constitution may be proposed by a simple majority of members and must be presented at one meeting prior to the vote. Any proposed amendment becomes effective once ratified by two-thirds of the voting members present at the meeting.

 

BI-LAWS

I. Membership

Membership shall be of four classes:

A. Active undergraduate

B. Associate undergraduate

C. Graduate

D. Honorary

Of these, only the first (Active undergraduates) shall have voting privileges.

A. Active Membership

 

1. All biology "majors" having completed twelve hours or the equivalent in units of biology with an overall cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 with an average GPA of 3.2 in their biology courses shall be eligible.

2. Associate Members may be promoted by meeting the requirements of Active Membership, by distinguished involvement in Beta Beta Beta, nomination by officers, or by recommendation by a biology advisor and another biology faculty member.

B. Associate Membership

 

 

1. This group shall consist of persons having GPAs between a 2.8 and 3.0 with a biology average of a 3.0 showing potential and desire to meet the standards of Active Membership.

2. The faculty shall nominate those eligible for Associate Membership and they shall be accepted by a simple majority vote by the voting members of the chapter present at that meeting.


C. Graduate Membership

 

1. This group shall consist of faculty members or others having completed their undergraduate studies, who have an interest in biology and who are approved by a majority of the Active Members present at the meeting.


D. Honorary Membership

 

1. This membership may be conferred upon any person deemed worthy of the honor, having an interest in the biological or related sciences, and being approved by the simple majority of Active Members present at the meeting.


E. Application for Membership

 

1. Notification about Beta Beta Beta applications will be available at the beginning of each semester to all biology majors via e-mail and posters.

 

II. Initiation Fees

A. A thirty dollar fee, determined by the national chapter, shall be charged to each new Active Member. This provides life membership in the parent society, membership in the chapter prior to completion of undergraduate studies, and a two year subscription of BIOS the journal of the society.

B. A twenty dollar fee shall be charged to each new Associate Member. If (s)he should attain the standards of Active Membership this fee shall be credited toward the Active Membership fee.

C. A thirty dollar fee shall be charged to each new Graduate Member.

D. A thirty dollar fee shall be charged for an Honorary Membership. The chapter will pay this fee from its treasury.

III. Dues

A. Dues shall be assessed for the school year, payable by the semester or term, if they are deemed necessary by the report of the Treasurer. If they are necessary, they must be approved by the simple majority present at the meeting. Approval of dues will be for a one year period only-if they are to be extended they must be re-approved.

IV. Officers

A. Officers may be selected from the Active Membership only for terms not to exceed one year.

B. The President shall:

1. be elected for a one year term at a regular business meeting by ballot

2. take office at the first meeting of the school year

3. provide leadership and organization for regular and special meetings

4. be the program chairperson


C. The Vice President shall:

 

1. be elected for a one year term at a regular meeting by ballot

2. take office at the first meeting of the school year

3. assume the duties of the President in his/her absence or removal

4. oversees all committees and coordinates their activities, reporting their status to the President determining committee organization

5. assume responsibility as editor of Biocenose and the web page


D. The Secretary shall:

 

1. be elected for a one year term at a regular meeting by ballot

2. take office at the first meeting of the school year

3. take any notes required by the President or Vice President

4. submit a monthly report to student government and the faculty advisor


E. The Treasurer shall:

 

1. be elected for a one year term at a regular meeting by ballot

2. be elected on a separate part of the ballot. (S)He is to be the from a group of persons nominated specifically nominated for these duties

3. take office at the first meeting of the school year

4. bring the chapter ledger to all meetings

5. collect moneys from dues and/or fund raising activities to be held in an account for chapter use

6. collect special activity fees and see that the bills are paid for same


F. The Historian shall:

 

1. be elected for a one year term at the time of the other elections

2. be from a group of nominees for this office

3. take office at the first meeting of the school year

4. write accounts of meetings and activities for print in the Juniatian and the society journal

5. help the President in publicizing meetings and activities


G. Removal and replacement of an officer requires the simple majority vote of all Active membership and notification of the faculty advisor.

V. Voting Procedures

A. Voting at regular meetings shall consist of raising of hands or secret ballot, the decision to be set at the President’s discretion.

B. A simple majority shall consist of 50% of all Active Members present at the meeting.

C. Election of officers shall occur by secret ballot of those Active Members interested and/or nominated for the position.

D. Club business shall occur via a majority decision of officers and approval by faculty advisor.

E. Time of elections

1. Nominations shall be accepted for each of the officers at the last regular meeting in March

2. Ballots shall be prepared and distributed to all Active Members, and the results tabulated and announced at the first regular meeting in April

 

VI. Advisors

A. Advisors shall be selected from the graduate members of the Juniata College community by a simple majority. They shall be elected for a term not to exceed three years, but may be consecutively reelected.

B. Removal and replacement of an advisor requires the simple majority vote of all Active Membership.

VII. Amendments or Additions to the Bi-laws

A. Any bi-law may be amended by a simple majority of all Active Members present at the meeting.

B. Any addition of new by-laws may be approved by a simple majority as above.

IX. Special Activities

A. The chapter shall partake of opportunities to raise moneys by any activity approved by a simple majority at a meeting.

B. Social activities shall be arranged by committees after membership approval of the event. The event shall be approved by a simple majority vote.

1. Additional moneys needed for these events may be assessed of the persons attending the same.

 

X. Attendance

A. If any Active Member of the Lambda Epsilon Chapter of Beta Beta Beta should be absent from two Chapter sponsored functions or meetings during the academic year (including new member inductions), the absentee will be subject to probation as set forth in sections B and C of this section entitled Attendance. 

B. Probation will include the requirements that the party on probation attend the remaining chapter functions or meetings (including new member inductions).

C. If the party on probation does not comply with the requirements of his/her probation, after review by the chapter officers the person may be demoted. If the chapter officers review a case and judge that one or both of the absences of the party were legitimate (e.g. sickness, injury, etc.), then the party will be considered off probation and once again subject to the conditions set forth in this bi-law.

D. The party in question will be reserved the right to appeal any proceedings brought against him/her to:

1. the chapter officers

2. the chapter advisor

3. the National Office

4. or all of the above.

 

E. Any person demoted from the organization has the right to seek reinstatement by:

1. attending four consecutive activities

2. demonstrating a substantial dedication to any sub-committee

 

F. If a party has been removed they must notify an officer of their intention to seek reinstatement the semester following their removal. During this semester they must adhere to all attendance policies following the vote by the officers concerning the person status.

XI. Committees

A. All Active Members are required to serve on a sub-committee for at least one semester AND are required to write one article for Biocenose per academic year while at Juniata College.

B. The following committees will be available, followed by the officer who will act as advisor:
